With One Shot at the Strictly Glitterball Trophy, can Aston backflip his way to the final?
There's some more than qualified Judges at that table and I'm determined to win them over!Aston Merrygold
This Peterborough-born star knows exactly how it feels to perform in front of millions of people every Saturday night. Finding fame with group JLS on The X Factor back in 2008 – coming second to fellow Strictly 2017 star Alexandra Burke – Aston’s sold out arenas, bagged five number one singles and sold over 10 million records worldwide.
Aston’s first brush with fame began with a performance as Michael Jackson on Stars In Their Eyes in 2002, before going on to appear in Fun Song Factory at the age of 16. It was meeting future band mate Marvin Humes at an audition that became a major turning point, leading him to become part of JLS, one of Britain’s biggest ever boy bands.
Alongside his vocal talents, Aston’s renowned for his slick moves and on-stage acrobatics, landing him a judging spot on Sky 1’s Got to Dance alongside Kimberly Wyatt and Ashley Banjo. But despite his street dancing prowess, Aston knows there’s a lot to learn from his Strictly experience.
“My dance history is a self-made one. I never trained in any form of dance, I just enjoyed watching my favourite artists do their thing whilst growing up, and now I've been lucky enough to be able to add it to my career. I'm looking forward to all things on Strictly. It looks ridiculously fun and I'm so up for the challenge.”
To help him along the way, he’s calling on 2007 winner and former judge Alesha Dixon for support. “She’s a good friend of mine so I'll be getting tips!”
And as for any fears? “Splitting my trousers on a split could be a little embarrassing…”
Splits? Backflips? Alesha-approved moves? You’re making our hearts Beat Again Aston.
