Britain's first television magazine programme dedicated to motor racing, Wheelbase was first broadcast by the BBC in 1964.

The show covered a range of subjects, from Grand Prix races to bloke-ish reports on driving holidays to France.

Hugely popular with viewers, it also covered glamorous international races such as the Monte Carlo Rally, where Wheelbase presenters like Gordon Wilkins even took part in the competition themselves.

Wheelbase ran from 1964 to 1975 and in attitude was very much the forerunner of Top Gear.
