Claire and Sylvia - Educating Sylvia
Sylvia left school at 15 in 1963. She worked in a building society and had Claire in 1969. Sylvia’s parents were working class and believed that education was wasted on girls, so she left school without any qualifications. After she had Claire she went to night school and passed her exams and then someone suggested she could go to university. Thanks to a grant, and a supportive husband she went to Birmingham University in 1978 to study History and Social Sciences. Her at uni was like Educating Rita! After a 20 year career in IT management, she returned to uni again to study for her Masters in History Local and Regional history and later awarded a PhD (with a thesis on the English Reformation). Claire is very proud of her mum's achievements, especially when she thinks about the expectations for her when she was young. Claire has worked around education all her life but has no aspirations of following in her mum's footsteps doing more degrees.
