Matthew Hedges: How safe is it for academics to travel to the UAE?
Matthew Hedges, the British academic jailed for spying in the Arab United Emirates has been freed. The UAE issued the pardon as part of a series of orders on the country's National Day anniversary. The incident has raised questions about how safe it is to be an academic in the region and to what extent authorities are clamping down on freedom of speech. Kristian Coates Ulrichsen is a Middle East specialist at Rice University in Houston Texas. He was detained in 2013 at Dubai airport after writing critically about the Arab Spring.
