Is black America divided by skin shades?
Beyoncé, Rihanna and Mariah Carey are world-renown black singers in the United States. The father of Beyoncé, Mathew Knowles, has said they all owe their success to their light-coloured skins. He's also said that he married Beyoncé's mother because he thought she was white, not black. His remarks have triggered a debate about 'colourism; a prejudice based on the lightness or darkness of someone's skin. African-American poet Hannah Sawyerr reflects on the issue.
