Missing school because of their period

Childrens' rights activists in Ghana have reacted with anger to a local ban on schoolgirls crossing the river while menstruating. The measure - in the centre of the country - is said to have been imposed by a local river god. The pupils have to cross the river to go to school...so the ban effectively denies them access to education once a month.
