Was Mahatma Gandhi a racist?

Thousands of Ghanaians have signed a petition demanding that a statue of the spiritual and political leader should be taken down from the University of Ghana in Accra. The statue was a gift from Indian president Pranab Mukherjee but professors and students say that Mahatma was a racist. In his writings he frequently referred to "native Africans" as "savages", and "kaffirs" who wanted to live only in "indolence and nakedness". This was in the early 20th century, a time of colonialism - but doesn't this clearly imply a view of black Africans as morally inferior which is racist? Gandhi did become a hero to the black emancipation movement, inspiring civil rights leaders like Martin Luther King and - according to Nelson Mandela - helping to win the struggle against Apartheid. Three callers share their views with Amol Rajan.
