Rescued at sea
More than 500 migrants are packed onto this leaky boat adrift in the Mediterranean. Every inch of space on deck is taken and more people are packed into the hold. They are given life jackets by the crew from the Phoenix, a privately funded search and rescue ship also known as the Migrant Offshore Aid Station or MOAS. Transferring the migrants is a delicate operation, the boat could easily capsize and not everyone on board can swim. Most of these people come from Eritrea. They have been travelling for months and have paid thousands of dollars to the smugglers based in Libya who organised their perilous journey.
