China’s ‘apartheid’ – the Hukou system
Like many booming economies, China relies on migrant workers to build, clean, assemble or cook. But where China is unusual is that the migrants aren’t coming from abroad, but from elsewhere in the country. These migrants are frozen out of social services, due to “Hukou”, in effect an internal passport. Tim Franks hears some of their tales.
