Tommo recalls how Charlie and he are posted to the front line trenches. Tommo is relieved to be going and - he hopes - leaving Sergeant Hanley for good. Once at the Front the two brothers are part of a night patrol sent across no-man's-land to take an enemy soldier prisoner. The patrol leader, Captain Wilkes, is injured and Charlie shows great courage coming to his rescue. Captain Wilkes acknowledges this by giving Charlie his watch.
