The first tanks

Just before dawn on the 15 September 1916, tanks went into battle for the very first time. They were developed with such secrecy that the tanks came as much of a surprise to the British troops as the Germans.

Although their military impact was minor, on the home front it was enormous; the press were quick to herald the tank as a new ‘wonder’ weapon which promised to undo the misery of the Somme.
