Music 'til Midnight - Moira Stuart showcases the best in easy listening sounds and timeless standards performed by the greatest artists of the past 60 years. For this, the final programme of the current series the music comes from June Christy, Carmen McRae, Louis Armstrong, Dr. John and Cassandra Wilson. This week's featured album is Tony Bennett's career defining 1962 recording, I Left My Heart In San Francisco. This was the album where Tony shook off his image as a 1950s balladeer as he sought out a new musical direction with producer Ernest Altschuler and his pianist / musical director, Ralph Sharon. As well as the album's title track, a hitherto obscure song discovered by Ralph Sharon, Tony also took the opportunity to put songs like Cy Coleman and Carolyn Leigh's The Best Is Yet To Come and The Rules Of The Road firmly on the musical map.
