Sara Paretsky on VI Warshawski

American writer Sara Paretsky is credited with revolutionising the crime genre with her female private eye VI Warshawski. Sara wrote her first Warshawski novel – Indemnity Only – in 1982 and has just published Brushback, the 17th in the series. She joins Jenni to talk about growing up in rural Kansas, coming up with a woman character who has sex but isn’t seen as immoral, and breaking the gender barrier in detective fiction.

Sexual Harassment on French Public Transport

The French government have created a 12 point plan to stop sexual harassment on public transport after a poll revealed that 100% of women had been victims of unwanted sexual attention. The survey of 600 women, created by the French equality watchdog, Haut Conseil à L'égalité Entre Femmes et Hommes, exposed the high rate of harassment in France and highlighted that although it is commonplace, most women didn’t know that what they were experiencing was an offence.

In order to tackle this, the government has created a 12 point action plan, which includes a new text alert scheme to report incidents more quickly. Jane talks to Bénédicte Paviot, UK Correspondent for France 24, to find out more about the plan and how effective it will be.

Joss Stone

At 28, Joss Stone has been in music half her life. She signed to a major label at 15, and released her debut album, The Soul Sessions, aged 16. She has sold over 14 million albums worldwide, and enjoyed UK and US success, winning Grammys and Brits, and working with some of the biggest names in music. Now she returns with her seventh album Water For Your Soul, combining not only her trademark soul, but also reggae, world, and hip hop sounds, and which she made in collaboration with Dennis Bovell, Damian Marley, and Nitin Sawhney. Jess Stone joins Jenni to talk about her life and career, and to perform Stuck on you, taken from her new album, live in the studio.

Joss Stone’s new album Water For Your Soul, together with her single, The Answer, are out on Friday 17 July on her label Stone’d Records

Sarah Willingham

The new series of Dragon’s Den began on Sunday and one of three new dragons is Sarah Willingham. Dubbed a mum-trepreneur, she’s the first working mother to be on the panel. By her mid-20s she was already head of the International Division of Pizza Express. At 28 she left the company in order to take on ailing business Bombay Bicycle Club, which she transformed into the largest and most successful Indian restaurant chain in the UK, eventually selling it back to its original owners for a seven figure sum. Now a mother of four, she works from home, where she, along with her husband Michael, invest in entrepreneurs. Sarah talks to Jenni about combining motherhood and business, her experiences in the den and her desire to inspire more women to start businesses of their own.
