Lee 'Scratch' Perry is a godfather of both reggae and dub. Starting in the late 60s with The Upsetters, he wrote the book on Jamaican mixing desk trickery and he's continued to innovate, ensuring that legions of followers absorb his every move.
For the past 15 years, film director Volker Schaner followed Perry on a spiritual and geographical journey taking in Jamaica, Ethiopia, Germany, Switzerland and London. In addition to footage of the man himself, Lee 'Scratch' Perry's Vision Of Paradise features an all-star cast of dub and reggae-related musicians, and it will premiere in East London on Saturday.
Following a week of hot summer temperatures, Perry's mix provides a lovely, languid bit of dub, tracing his musical journey from The Upsetters to a recent collaboration with Alpha Steppa.
