Baroness Lawrence on ending violence against children

A new report from UNICEF UK is due out on what they describe the epidemic of violence against children around the world. Jane hears from the charity and from Woman’s Hour Game Changer Baroness Lawrence, who’s just back from visiting children and parents affected by violence in Nairobi.

Breast cancer pioneer Professor Craig Jordan

Professor Craig Jordan is one of the world’s pre-eminent experts in breast cancer research and treatment. He studied at the University of Leeds where his work provided the foundation for his future groundbreaking research into Tamoxifen which has saved the lives of so many women with breast cancer. Its use was approved by the US Food and Drug administration in 1978. Craig has devoted his career to understanding the drug – its benefits, pitfalls and other applications.  He is returning to the University of Leeds this Saturday, October 25th 2014, to present their Alumni Annual Lecture entitled:  “Leeds' role in breast cancer breakthrough - the Tamoxifen tale”.

Common People: Alison Light on her history of an English family

When Alison Light set out to write a book about her family history and investigate the untold stories of ordinary folk, she found paupers, publicans, skilled workers and an itinerant people who travelled to work in servitude or industry. This story of her people draws surprising parallels to lives today and to all our family histories. Alison joins Jane Garvey on Woman’s Hour to talk about our fascination with the past and how it relates to the present.

Feminist Nail Wraps

What have nail bars got to do with feminism?  Artist Phoebe Davies has been running the Influences Nail Bar project which takes groups of women aged 12 – 24 and asks them to identify their feminist role models.  They then work within the local area using the nail bar as a vehicle to spread the stories of women who have changed their local communities.  Our reporter Henrietta Harrison went to see the project in action at the Fierce Festival in Birmingham.

The Influences Nail Bar project will be running at Cambridge Junction on Sunday 26th October.

Anjum Anand Cooks the Perfect…Stuffed Aubergines

This Thursday 23rd October many Indians all around the world will we be celebrating Diwali, the ancient Hindu festival of lights symbolizing the victory of light and over spiritual darkness. And to mark the festival, TV chef Anjum Anand will be joining Jane to demonstrate a vegetarian dish of Paneer or Ricotta stuffed aubergines in tomato sauce, taken from her latest book, Anjum’s Quick & Easy. Dubbed ‘the Indian Nigella’ Anjum believes Indian food is always evolving and can be adapted to busy lives without compromising on taste.
