Cattiness In The Boardroom & In Business

In the latest series of The Apprentice, the ‘girls’ team have been portrayed squabbling and vying against each other. The third episode of You’re Fired discussed their 'catty' behaviour, and yet it’s not the first series in which the female candidates have been portrayed this way. So what’s going on? Do women really behave like this when working and competing together in business? Or is there an issue with the TV casting, editing, and overall portrayal of these women? To discuss Samira Ahmed is joined by ex-Apprentice runner-up Saira Khan, TV Executive Lorraine Heggessey, and by Professor of Organisational Behaviour, specialising in women at work, Professor Sharon Mavin of Newcastle Business School.

Ute Lemper

Ute Lemper has been called a “modern day Dietrich” and she is famed for her interpretations of Kurt Weill, Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel, as well as Marlene Dietrich. She has become assocaited with the cabaret songs of the Weimar Republic, but many theater goers will remember her award winning performance as Velma Kelly in ‘90's revival of the musical Chicago. Samira Ahmed talks to Ute Lemper about her new song cycle to the love poems of Pablo Neruda.

Ute Lemper sings Pablo Neruda on Tuesday 28th May 2013 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall as part of the London Lit Festival.

Eleanor Coade

Eleanor Coade is an unsung heroine of her time. She was an 18th century business woman who invented Coadestone which can be found all over the country including Buckingham Palace.  Caroline Stanford,  Historian at the Landmark Trust, joins Samira Ahmed in the studio to discuss the life of this entrepreneur, a campaign to restore her last memorial, and to show some pieces of Coadestone that is used today.

Dana Stabenow

Bestselling Alaskan crime writer, Dana Stabenow is releasing her twentieth book in the Kate Shugak series called Bad Blood this month. It tells the story of bad blood between two villages but when two murders happen, Kate Shugak, a strong willed, defiant, native Alaskan private investigator, is called in to uncover the truth.  Dana Stabenow joins Samira Ahmed to discuss her books and her life.

Jewellery

Jewellery
The idea of commissioning a piece of jewellery sounds like a costly luxury. But it needn't be if what is precious is not the materials, but perhaps the meaning behind the piece. Judi Herman was there when Yuko Yama took delivery of the gold pendant she commissioned from designer Ruth Tomlinson, as a reminder of living in London as she returns to Tokyo.
