Rob Cowan reflects on the "Spirit of Schubert" with unusual arrangements and settings of the composer's work. These include Six German Dances, orchestrated by Anton Webern; the Wanderer Fantasy arranged for piano and orchestra by Franz Liszt; Gaspar Cassado's reworking of the Arpeggione Sonata in A Minor into a concerto for cello and orchestra; and movements 2 and 3 of the Grand Duo in C for two pianos (D. 812) orchestrated by Joachim and performed by Arturo Toscanini and the NBC Symphony Orchestra.
