Stealing Our History
BBC Radio Scotland investigates how metal thieves are damaging our heritage and what, if anything, can be done to stem the loss of our heritage and the theft of our history.
Scottish taxpayers are footing the bill for hundreds of thousands of pounds of damage caused by metal thieves. But it's not just empty buildings, council offices and schools that are being targeted. Metal thieves are now focussing on our heritage, stealing the lead from church roofs, pieces from open air museums, targeting sculptures in parks, gates, war memorials and even the lead in gravestones commemorating the dead from the wars. BBC Scotland investigates how our heritage is being irreparably damaged and what, if anything, can be done to stem the loss of our heritage and the theft of our history.
