With Sarah Walker. Including Tom Service's Schubert Lab; lieder from Elisabeth Schwarzkopf; Rabbi Julia Neuberger; Schubert: Piano Sonata, D459/459a; Christian Gerhaher.
presented by Sarah Walker
Sarah is joined by Tom Service for Schubert Lab, followed by a mini Lieder recital by Elisabeth Schwarzkopf
Sarah's guest today is Baroness Julia Neuberger. She has chosen Schubert's setting of Psalm 92, composed to a Hebrew text and written at the request of and perhaps for a performance by Salomon Sulzer, the cantor at a new synagogue in Vienna. She's also chosen an excerpt from the unfinished opera Der Graf Von Gleichen, based on an exotic tale set in the Ottoman Empire, but addressing the serious issue of polygamy.
Piano Sonata in E, D459/459a
Wilhelm Kempff (piano)
Today's Lieder advocate is Christian Gerhaher, who will introduce recordings of some of his favourite Schubert recordings.
