Dvorak, Martinu, Grieg, Janacek - Part 1

Episode 1 of 3

From the Royal Albert Hall, London. John Eliot Gardiner conducts the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in Dvorak's ebullient Carnival Overture and Martinu's Sixth Symphony.

Live from the Royal Albert Hall, London

Presented by Petroc Trelawny

Sir John Eliot Gardiner and the visiting Czech Philharmonic Orchestra frame their programme with Dvorak's ebullient, life-affirming Carnival Overture and his radiant 8th Symphony. In between, Martinu's 6th Symphony dances with Czech and Moravian folk melodies and rhythms; there's a detour to the Norwegian fjords for Grieg's Piano Concerto with Lars Vogt; and back to the Moravian Janacek whose gentle Ballad of Blanik was inspired by recent Czech independence and the new nation's legendary guardians.

Dvorák: Overture, 'Carnival'
Martinu: Fantaisies symphoniques (Symphony No. 6)

Lars Vogt, piano
Czech Philhamonic Orchestra
Sir John Eliot Gardiner, conductor
