School Choir of the Year 2020

This year’s School Choir of the Year competition had to come to an early close after the Heats were recorded for Radio Ulster back in February.

Social Distancing meant that the semi-finals and final of the competition could not take place.

It was disappointing for the 50 schools who took part in the heats, but it wasn’t the end of the road for one school.

Ballyholme Primary School’s performance during the early stage of the competition was so impressive that the video posted on BBC Radio Ulster’s Facebook page has now gone viral with more than three million views.

You Say

Ballyholme Choir collaborate with The Ulster Orchestra.

Their performance of You Say had such a huge impact on listeners worldwide that the BBC NI School Choir of the Year team decided to surprise the choir by asking the Ulster Orchestra to help them create a very special rendition of the song.

Graeme Stewart from BBCNI’s Classical Music department orchestrated the piece and fourteen musicians rose to the challenge of making individual recordings on their mobile phones from home which helped create a stunning accompaniment to the choir’s performance.

Kerry McLean will present a highlights programme from home this weekend where you can see some of the other Junior and Senior choirs who performed in the competition.
