1Xtra Talk: Black and mixed race identities and culture in the UK

16 November 2016

We hosted the second of our #BlackandBritish panel discussions in the BBC Radio Theatre, with 1Xtra's Ace and BBC journalist Bridgitte Tetteh.

They were joined by DJ and musician Murkage Dave, freelance journalist and founding editor of the Black Ballad website Tobi Oreidein, social activist Capres Willow Turner, model agency director Chams Hayden, grim artist Izzie Gibbs and comedian Judi Love.

In our first discussion, we talked about what it means to be young, British and black. In this section we delved deep into the black British experience, from multiculturalism and integration to appropriation and marginalisation to find out: what is it like to be black in the UK?

We opened with a heavy-hitter

Murkage Dave talked about why it's such a major subject

Tobi Oredein talked about the media's role in creating a fear of immigration and hostility to immigrants
