Puzzle for Today

Puzzle No. 467 – Friday 26 May

At the Chipping Norton Literary Festival this weekend, there is a jumble sale for damaged books. One particular book has had two separate leaves torn out. The stall manager says that she can offer you the book for free if you can work out the torn page numbers. All you know is that the page numbers of the two missing leaves add up 82. What are the missing page numbers?

Today’s #PuzzleForToday has been set by Bobby Seagull, a school Maths teacher and Cambridge University Doctorate student.

As this is a book, the two leaves will have four separate and consecutive page numbers. Let's call x the first missing page. Then the next three are x + 1, x + 2 and x + 3.

x + (x + 1) + (x + 2) + (x + 3) = 82

4x + 6 = 82

4x = 76

x = 19

So the page numbers are 19, 20, 21 and 22.
