Lava Zone - Balance, Agility and Coordination Skills
Join commentators Johnny and Jasmine as they introduce a range of basic movements to help your class gain the skills they will need to complete the Lava Zone.
The core idea behind Lava Zone is that pupils imagine that the floor is made of lava and they must avoid it at all costs! Pupils are given areas of safety in the classroom, and must find their way to them using jumps, hops and skips, as the lava sweeps from one side of the room to the other. To remain in the safety zone, children must hold a balance.
Use in Class
This clip is designed for use with pupils aged 5 to 7. It provides plenty of opportunities for your class to join in with the action on screen. Once they have mastered the key skills in the warm up, you could set up your classroom as a Lava Zone and complete the challenges. You could also use equipment, such as benches and other apparatus, as ‘mountains’ that the children can use as their safety point.
Key curriculum skills include balance, coordination, running, jumping, basic movements, agility, teamwork, speed, creativity, imagination, gymnastics based (early specialisation sport/key in developing functional movement), personal challenge and intrinsic motivation.
Dodge Zone - Throwing and Catching Skills
Commentators Johnny and Jasmine join the teams in the arena to learn the rules and skills of the game 'Dodge Zone'. Pupils can then test their own ability by playing along with the interactive sections of the film; where balls appear to fly out of the screen towards them. The'll need to dodge left, right, duck, jump and lean back to avoid being hit. The quicker they are able to react, the better chance they'll have of completing the zone.
Use in Class
This clip is designed for use with pupils aged 5 to 7. You could set up your own ‘Dodge Zone’ in the classroom, school hall or playground. Start by practicing the skills outlined in the film, before splitting the class into two teams for a game.
Key curriculum skills include throwing, catching, agility, reaction time, responding to changing stimuli, understanding and applying basic team tactics of attacking and defending, competitive element.
Dance Zone - Simple Movement Patterns
Join commentators Johnny and Jasmine live from the arena as they introduce simple movement patterns linked to the theme of the four seasons. Children are given themes with complementary music playing and encouraged to make shapes with their bodies that express the narrative of the theme.
Use in Class
This clip is designed for use with pupils aged 5 to 7. Pupils could come up with their own theme and devise movement patterns and shapes linked to it. Themes could be animals in the jungle, emotions and feelings, food or anything they can come up with.
This clip will be relevant for teaching Physical Education. All based around expressing a narrative through the movements of your body (four seasons, animals in the jungle, human emotions and feelings, natural environment) simple shapes (star, pencil, ball, letters), balance, focus, energy, lines, tension, travelling, jumping, use of levels, contact points.
Simple Indoor Track and Field Challenges
Join commentators Johnny and Jasmine as they introduce a range of athletics challenges, including sprinting on the spot for 30 seconds, squat high jump and throwing at a target. Throughout the clip they also provide technical advice for improving your performance; including diet, hydration, sleep and determination.
Use in Class
This clip is designed for use with pupils aged 7 to 11. You could set up a series of simple events, similar to those in the clip. This could include a race, vertical jump test, a long jump or indoor shot. Pupils could also make up new races, such as a fireman’s ladder race, crab race or rolling race.
Key curriculum skills: Running (pump arms, stay tall, knees up, kick out). Throwing (L-Shape feet, throwing elbow back, pull hard and push, step forwards). Catching (wide base, fingers together fingers up - catching boxes together or fingers down) Jumping (low squat, arms back, spring up, head leads).
Hybrid Sports - Attacking and Defending
Join commentators Johnny and Jasmine live from the arena as they introduce a selection of games, which have been modified for the classroom. For example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis. They outline the basic principles and tactics of attack and defence; giving pupils the opportunity to join in throughout.
Use in Class
This clip is designed for use with pupils aged 7 to 11. You could split your class into teams of 4 and set up games demonstrated in the clip; following the principles of attack and defence. Pupils can score by making 5 successful passes, and a clear cut attacking opportunity could equate to goal. Playing hybrid sports also allows for the development of team play and positive social interaction.

Obstacle Challenge - Trust and Teamwork
Commentators Johnny and Jasmine introduce a range of basic movements to help your class gain the skills they will need to work together and complete the ‘Obstacle Challenge’. We join the red team in the arena as they attempt to navigate obstacles by crawling, climbing and weaving through them. Trust and teamwork are essential to success in this challenge. Will the red team be able to work together to complete the course?
Use in Class
This clip is designed for use with pupils aged 7 to 11. Create your own obstacle course, either in the classroom, school hall or playground, as outlined in the film. Split your class into two teams and blindfold one person in each team. Those in the team who are not blindfolded are then responsible for directing the blindfolded player around the obstacles; until they get to the finishing point. Swap over until everyone has had the opportunity to be a guide or complete the course.
Key curriculum skills: Balance, coordination, running, jumping, plyometric bounding, physically taxing basic movements, agility, teamwork, speed, creativity, imagination, gymnastics based (early specialisation sport/key in developing functional movement), personal challenge and intrinsic motivation.
