Puzzle for Today

Puzzle No. 136 – Wednesday 10 January

Imagine squishing dates, so that:

1 January is 1-1, which becomes 11.

2 January is 2-1, which becomes 21 and

25 December is 25-12, which becomes 2,512.

If we were to transform all the dates of a typical year in this way and find the average, will the average be higher or lower in a leap year?

(ie will adding 29 February, which is 29-2, which becomes 292, increase or decrease the average?)

Today's #PuzzleForToday has been set by Yuji Okitani the 2017 UK winner of Who Wants to Be a Mathematician

The answers to the puzzle will only be available for a week.
