MPFree - April 2016

18+ – Drama

Thursday 21 April, by Frank Palmer Team Laverne

What’s that we hear in the clicking 808 of today’s MPFree? It’s the sound of another weekend fast approaching – brought a little nearer by 18+’s dark, late night groove, ‘Drama’.

Download 18+ – Drama

‘Drama’ is the first cut from 18+’s forthcoming second album, Collect, which sees release on May 20th via Houndstooth. Recorded at the duo’s respective homes in Berlin and Honolulu, the new record fittingly explores notions of distance and communication, making use of sampled phone calls and personal field recordings in the process. You can catch 18+ at Hacnkey’s Pickle Factory on the day of their album’s release, or better yet, travel to Berlin and watch them play at the legendary Berghain (May 18th) – surely the perfect venue for this intensely nocturnal music.

Bishop Nehru - $acred Visions

Wednesday 20 April, by Frank Palmer Team Laverne

With the weather warming up outside, we’re offering up a pre-emptive summertime jam from NYC wunderkind, Bishop Nehru. His golden era channelling ‘$acred Visions’ shimmers like hot air over tarmac.

Download Bishop Nehru - $acred Visions

Fresh off Joey Bada$$’s World Domination tour, Bishop Nehru has announced a new mixtape, Magic 19, with lead single ‘$acred Visions’. The 19 year-old rapper takes sole production rites on this hazy tune, and delivers his verses with the lazy self-assurance of an MC who’s well and truly in his element; it’s not hard to see why he’s caught the attention of Nas, who will serve as executive producer on his next album, and MF Doom, with whom he collaborated on an album back in 2014. Magic 19 drops on June 3rd. Best reserve the spot on your summer playlist now.

Flowers - Bitter Pill

Tuesday 19 April, by Isabel Clarke Team Laverne

We’ve got some British indie pop for Tuesday’s instalment of MPFree. Flowers, a trio from London, bring ethereal vocals, distorted guitars all supported by heavy-hitting drums to their track “Bitter Pill”.

Download Flowers – Bitter Pill

Bitter Pill is taken from Flowers’ latest album Everybody’s Dying To Meet You, released earlier this year on Fortuna Pop!. Singer Rachael was the final piece to the Flowers jigsaw after responding to a chance advert from guitarist Sam, wanting to make pop songs like “early Madonna through a broken tape machine”. Flowers have announced UK Live dates supporting New Yorkers and We Are Scientists across April and May to then travel across the pond to support their US label-mates, Beverly.

Pauline Andrès - Broken Record

Today’s MPFree will be easing you into a new week… Because everyone needs a bit of Americana to help with the Monday Blues. This hazy folk track from singer Pauline Andrès has a smokey feel which is just what we need.

Download Pauline Andrès – Broken Record

Broken Record is taken from Pauline Andrès’ latest album The Heart Breaks, which was released on Friday (April 15th) through Old Souls Records. The twelve track album expresses raw vulnerability, intricate story-telling and a smorgasbord of multi-cultural influences from the roadtripping songstress.

Stephen Steinbrink – Absent Mind

Wednesday 13 April, by Matthew Mills Team Laverne

There’s a country inflected MPFree for us to delve into this Wednesday, and like all the best music that’s indebted to Western USA, it delivers knotted, complex lyrics with a silky-smooth lilt. It’s really rather excellent.

Download Stephen Steinbrink – Absent Mind

Stephen is a songwriter and record engineer, born and raised in the Arizona desert and currently floating around western USA. This MPFree comes from his 7th album Anagrams which is due for release on the 1st July on Melodic Records. Anagrams was intensely recorded over 2 years at UNKNOWN, a retrofitted analogue studio in a lofty, de-sanctified church in the secluded island town of Anacortes, Washington. The unflinching portraits of addiction and mental illness contained on the record glide between glacial grunge lurches, succinct power pop and lush country movements, the latter displayed with real beauty here.

Tuesday 12 April, by Matthew Mills Team Laverne

Our Tuesday MPFree is a delicate, stripped back slice of folk, with vocals and lyrics at the forefront. Thankfully newcomer Fenne Lily has prowess in both departments and you can download her debut for free if you follow the instructions on her website. Find out more about her whilst you're there.

Download Fenne Lily – Top To Toe

‘Top To Toe’ is the debut single from Bristol-based, singer-songwriter Fenne Lily. At the age of 17 she began travelling to Bristol from her home in Dorset, and within a year found herself supporting the likes of Marika Hackman, C Duncan and Eaves & Palace, among others. She’s currently on the road with rising talent Marlon Williams and will make her debut at this year’s Great Escape Festival. Fenne, now 19, has been quick to embrace the Bristol music scene and this track was recorded by her friend and fellow musician Dave Dixon (aka Tamu Massif) at his home studio.

AEONN - Initiate

Monday 11 April, by Matthew Mills Team Laverne

Welcome to another week of MPFree’s served up in a genre-crossing smorgasbord of musical titbits. Today we begin with a beautiful piece of stripped back composition from AEONN, because Monday should be about simplicity.

Download AEONN - Initiate

AEONN is the project of Nicolas Fleury, a composer whose work spans everything from post-rock guitar to industrial electronica, and in this case, atmospheric piano composition. It features on his latest album INSTAR which was released on Piano Day 2016 (28th March) blending AEONN’s inorganic electronic bass sounds with his organic piano arrangements. We stumbled across it thanks to a rather beautiful playlist that Nils Frahm put together to celebrate the same day, so if you’re in the mood for more, click through to his full list.

Lower Spectrum – Masquerade

Friday 8 April, by Matthew Mills Team Laverne

We’ve an Antipodean treat for your Friday MPFree courtesy of the infinitely talented Lower Spectrum. Bursting with poly-rhythms, samples and a doo-wop or two it’s yours for nothing if you follow the Friday link.

Download Lower Spectrum – Masquerade

With his New Haze EP set to land on the Australian label Pilerats Records in April, Lower Spectrum (AKA Ned Beckley) has offered up his track ‘Masquerade’ for free. While his music continues to gain a considerable amount of traction internationally, Ned’s been fairly busy, whether soundtracking documentaries or scoring music for the Australian Ballet. All this while supporting the likes of Jon Hopkins, Andy Stott, Pantha Du Prince, Flako, Onra, and Nightmares On Wax in recent months.

Jesse Mac Cormack – After The Glow

Thursday 7 April, by Matthew Mills Team Laverne

There’s a haunting quality to our MPFree this Thursday, thanks to the soft, languid nature of Jesse Mac Cormack’s vocal, set against the echoing drama of the instrumentation. Have a listen and a download and hear for yourself, it’s a thing of beauty.

Download Jesse Mac Cormack – After The Glow

Jesse Mac Cormack is Montreal born and raised, and this latest release on Secret City Records follows two EP’s on the same label last year - Music For The Soul & CRUSH. Jesse first began recording and producing his own music with nothing but a guitar and an amp, but his recent work sees him incorporating tape machines, synths and a combination of vintage instruments and equipment. He records all of his music in his home studio, which helps to achieve a sound that is both raw and smooth at once. He’s coming over to play Brighton’s Great Escape Festival on the 19th-21st May, so we expect to be hearing a lot more from him in the coming year.

Rozi Plain - Marshes

Wednesday 6 April, by Matthew Mills Team Laverne

We’ve a real show favourite for our MPFree today, thanks to an excellent new album in the offing from Rozi Plain. If you’re into midweek mellow vibes then this is just the ticket.

Download Rozi Plain - Marshes

This beautiful piece of music comes from a new Rozi Plain compilation Friend of a Friend. Featuring remixes, sessions and unreleased tracks it’s set for release on 15th April on Lost Map Records. The warm guitar and harp flourishes on ‘Marshes’ sit perfectly with the sound of her 2015 album Friend, and it was given its first play by a certain Marc Riley on 6 Music back in March. The compilation album in fact features 4 session tracks that Rozi recorded for Marc, which we’re delighted about because her January visit to Salford was as spectacularly good as ever. You can catch her on the road through April and May if you want to see for yourself.

Weaves – One More

Tuesday 5 April, by Matthew Mills Team Laverne

Our Tuesday MPFree is flown over from Canada and packed full of energy. Weaves are making waves with their very own brand of ebullient, art-damaged pop. They’ve offered up this gem for nothing for a short time, so take advantage.

Download Weaves – One More

Emerging from the fertile Toronto DIY scene, this is the debut single from frenetic four-piece Weaves. Out on 6th May on Memphis Industries, it’s the first offering from their self-titled debut which is coming out on Buzz Records in June. Having just checked out of Austin for SXSW they’re currently on the road in the US with Sunflower Bean, but will be hitting Europe in the summer with a host of festival appearances including Latitude and End of the Road.

Shawni & 23△D - Feel Love

Monday 4 April, by Matthew Mills Team Laverne

In the tradition of Monday MPFree’s, we’ve got an ambient, free flowing, meditative tune to get things rolling. Sent from the Californian sunshine, even the glitches you can hear in the beat seem soft and welcoming. ‘Feel Love’: it’s what we all need at the start of another week.

Download Shawni & 23△D - Feel Love

You may know Christopher Mohn and Reagan Denius as LA-based duo Dance Spirit, but they’ve taken on a new name, 23△d (23rd Dimension) and by the sounds of this track, more delicate approach to production. The idea behind the shift was to experiment as well forge new collaborations, and they’ve hooked up with singer-songwriter, devoted meditator, and yoga teacher Shawni for this project. Well that explains the balance and harmony of the tune then.

Subculture Sage – Nuff Ish On My Mind

Friday 1 April, by Matthew Mills Team Laverne

As we get ready to launch ourselves head-first into another weekend, our MPFree has some words of wisdom relating to ego. Step up Hypeman Sage to explain: ‘We shouldn't be so caught up in ourselves. Make mistakes, be wrong, learn from your experiences, pick yourself up and crack on’. Understood, let’s do this.

Download Subculture Sage – Nuff Ish On My Mind

Subculture Sage is North London based duo Subculture Sounds (producer) and MC Hypeman Sage. They’re leading the innovative UK Hip Hop scene from the front at the moment, and their debut self-released mixtape Big Smoke Autumn Blues will be available as a free download from 11th April. If this track isn't enough to keep you satiated until then, you can download three more on their Soundcloud. Go there, do it, play them, and as Sage says, crack on.

Everybody loves a spot of free music, so open your minds and get downloading now.
