Puzzle for Today

Puzzle No. 500 – Wednesday 12 June

This morning, listeners will be tuning into the 500th Puzzle for Today! To celebrate, we have an arithmetic puzzle where the theme is 500. The date today in day month year format is 12.06.2019. We split these into four numbers: 12, 6, 20 and 19. Using just the four basic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) and the four numbers 12, 6, 20 and 19, can you create 500? You do not have to use all the digits or the operators. If you're feeling particularly brave, are you able to create 500 using all four numbers?

Today’s #PuzzleForToday has been set by Bobby Seagull, a school Maths teacher and Cambridge University Doctorate student.

Method without using all numbers: 20 x (19 + 6) = 500

Method using all the numbers: 20 x (19 - 6 + 12) = 500
