Puzzle for Today

Puzzle No. 506– Thursday 20 June

One in five high school students drops out before getting a diploma in the US. Failing maths is the single biggest academic reason given. Prof Andrew Hacker from Queens College says only about 7% of human beings have a kind of natural aptitude for math, and for the rest, it's sheer torture! Assuming all those who get on with maths obtain their diploma, what percentage of us overcome maths challenges with just pure grit and determination?!

Today’s #PuzzleForToday has been set by Dr Shaun Fitzgerald, Director of The Royal Institution

4 in 5 students manage to get a diploma, which is 80% (of all students). Of these there are students who find maths comes naturally, 7% (of all students). So, the percentage who use grit and determination to get through =80-7 = 73%.
