Sheila Hancock to star in CBBC drama Feather Boy

CBBC Controller Dorothy Prior has commissioned an adaptation of Feather Boy, the debut novel by Nicky Singer, and winner of the 2002 Blue Peter Book of the Year.

The adaptation will star Sheila Hancock, Lindsey Coulson, Ronald Pickup, Aaron Johnson and Thomas Sangster.

Feather Boy is the story of Robert Nobel – a boy who is the butt of classroom jokes and victim of Niker, the class bully.

When Robert visits a local home for the elderly as part of a school project and meets Edith Sorrell, an old lady with a tragic past, he embarks on a series of events that will change their lives forever.

The debut novel of author Nicky Singer won critical acclaim, and has been adapted for television by Peter Tabern, winner of an International Emmy and the BAFTA Children's Writer Award for his adaptation of Stig of the Dump for CBBC in 2001.

Executive produced for the BBC by Elaine Sperber, Feather Boy goes into production in London in July.

It is being produced for CBBC by Childsplay Television and the writer and producer is Peter Tabern, the director is Dermot Boyd, and production designer is Jason Carlin.

All the BBC's digital services are now available on Freeview, the new free-to-view digital terrestrial television service, as well as on satellite and cable.

Freeview offers the BBC's eight television channels, interactive services from BBCi, as well as 11 BBC radio networks.
