Gary & Danielle's Northern Exposure

I wasn't sure quite what to think when I was told we were off to a farm to make beauty products. Jackie on the other hand was delighted with the prospect of getting back to nature and making her very own cosmetics. However, I decided to embrace the challenge and get my own hands dirty in the name of television.

Orchard Acre Farm is the brainchild of Teresa O'Hare. She started growing her own food on site as soon as she and her family moved to the farm about twenty years ago. However it was only in the past few years that she started offering training sessions for people on how to grow and cook their own produce.

The success of these classes encouraged Teresa to build the Eco-Barn; constructed using local and recycled materials it is fuelled by renewable energy, illuminated by daylight and rainwater is collected for laundry, toilets etc.

Those wanting to undertake a class in making organic beauty products will find themselves under the instruction of Pauline Corrigan. The session begins with a wander through Orchard Acre’s garden where students will pick petals from marigolds, harvest cucumbers or gather mint leaves (amongst other things) to use as ingredients.

After this they get busy in the Eco-Barn as Pauline guides them through the steps needed to make their own lotions and potions.

Most available activities take place in the Eco-Barn. Whether it's willow weaving, Thai yoga massage or a course on gardening for wildlife, all can be booked at Orchard Acre Farm. The Barn can also be used as a conference centre. And for the more adventurous explorer you can spend the night in the 18 foot hand painted Sioux Indian Tipi which sleeps up to four people.

A day long organic beauty product course costs £120.00 per person. Prices for other courses vary.
