Former Chelsea and England midfielder Frank Lampard has retired. Newsround looks back at his incredible 21-year professional career.
Frank Lampard began his career at West Ham, making his debut in January 1996 having progressed through the club's youth system.

But the presence at the London club of his dad Frank Lampard Sr, and uncle Harry Redknapp as manager, meant the teenager faced a lot of criticism from fans.

Lampard joined Chelsea from boyhood club West Ham for a fee of £11 million in 2001.

He went on to make 649 appearances for the Blues, and was central to the most successful spell in Chelsea's history as he and they completed a clean sweep of trophies at home and abroad.

...and the Champions League in 2012. Lampard also won four FA Cups, two League Cups and the Europa League.

When he left Chelsea in the summer of 2014, the midfielder was the club's record goal scorer with 211 goals.

Frank Lampard made his England debut against Belgium in 1999, going on to make 106 England appearances.

One of his most memorable moments in an England shirt came during the 2010 World Cup. Lampard thought he had equalised against Germany in the last-16 match, but the goal was not awarded despite replays showing it clearly crossed the line. England went to lose.

Towards the end of his career, Lampard swapped West London for the blue half of Manchester, spending a season with Man City in 2014.

Frank's made his debut for his final club New York City in August 2015. After a rocky start in USA, he eventually scored 15 goals in 31 appearances for New York. The city celebrated Frank Lampard Day in September 2016 after he scored his 300th career goal.

Lampard was awarded an Officer of Order of the British Empire (OBE) medal in 2015. It was presented to him by the Duke of Cambridge at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

The 38-year-old announced his decision on social media. His next step looks certain to be into coaching but he'll always remembered by football fans as one of the best footballers of his generation.
