When the tsunami hit, huge waves of water swept away whole towns and cities. On the left you can see the damage caused in Banda Aceh, Indonesia back in December 2004. To the right you can see the city as it looks today.

Around 228,000 people were killed by the tsunami. Prayers were held at a graveyard for tsunami victims in Banda Aceh - the city which was virtually wiped out by the waves.

The night before the anniversary, the Grand Mosque in Banda Aceh held a memorial service.

Nearly 5,500 people were killed in Thailand. Many of the victims were tourists who were on holiday in Thailand.

Survivors came to a special memorial monument in Peraliya to remember the victims of a train disaster that was caused by the tsunami.

The estimated cost of the damage was around £6.4billion. Ten years on, many coastal towns and villages have rebuilt their communities and lives.
