In South Australia, a spectacular thunderstorm overnight generated about 80,000 lighting strikes in 24 hours.

The cities of Melbourne and Adelaide were battered by torrential rain too.

The lightning strikes caused power surges which shut down the railway, and there are reports of damaged homes.

It's thought the storm could hit the East Coast city of Sydney tonight.
