Fifth seed and French Open champion Maria Sharapova is out of Wimbledon after losing to Germany's Angelique Kerber in an epic encounter.
Ninth seed Kerber held her nerve in a tense final set to win 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 6-4 on Centre Court.
Sharapova joins the likes of top seed Serena Williams and second seed Li Na as some of the top names to be knocked out before the later stages.
Kerber will now face Canada's Eugenie Bouchard in the quarter-finals.
Williams sisters out
Elsewhere, Serena and Venus Williams had to pull out of the doubles competition after Serena was taken ill on court.
They only managed to play a set and three games of their match on Court One against Kristina Barrois and Stefanie Voegele before Serena had to call an early end to her Wimbledon campaign.
