The 22nd Winter Olympics has opened with a spectacular ceremony in the Russian resort city of Sochi.
Around 3,000 performers and 2,000 volunteers took part in the opening ceremony, which was watched by a 40,000 strong audience at Sochi's Fisht Stadium.
At a cost of £30billion, the Sochi Games is the most expensive Olympics in history.
And no opening ceremony would be complete without a spectacular firework display, accompanying the three hour ceremony.
As part of the grand finale, tennis star Maria Sharapova, who grew up in Sochi, carried the Olympic flame into the stadium.
