This is the moment a 900kg satellite returned to Earth in a ball of flames.

The Gravity field and steady-state Ocean Circulation Explorer satellite - or GOCE for short - had come to the end of its life.

When satellites orbiting the Earth run out of fuel they can fall back to the planet and usual get destroyed as they enter our atmosphere.

The photo was taken by Bill Chater in the Falkland Islands on 11 November.

GOCE was launched in 2009 to accurately map Earth's gravity.
