Pupils in England should have longer school days and shorter holidays - says the government's top man in education.
Education Secretary Michael Gove has said in a speech that the current school term system is out of date.
He pointed to the high achievements of kids in East Asia, where "school days are longer, school holidays are shorter".
But the Association of School and College Leaders said quality of learning was more important than hours.
Mr Gove also argued that longer school days would be more family friendly and would help parents who work.
But Christine Blower from the National Union of Teachers said: "Teachers and pupils already spend longer hours in the classroom than most countries and also have some of the shortest summer holidays."
What do you think?
Do you think it's a good idea to have longer school days and fewer holidays? Or do you reckon you have enough time in class?
"I don't think they should make school days longer because you need to spend time with your family."
Lauren, Swansea, Wales
"Our school starts at 8:30 and finishes at 3:50, many of us have after school clubs and matches at this time we also get an hour of homework each night. If the day were any longer we would become tired in lessons. Holidays are a chance to recharge after weeks of work, we also get holiday homework and many of us study for exams in our own time too. Independent learning is an important part of education it doesn't just happen in school we don't want to become robots hobbies interests and socialising are important too."
Class 5A Duncombe School, Hertford, England
"This is a terrible idea, they should focus on more funding for schools and better quality teaching not more time in school as we've only 6 weeks summer vacation in Scotland which isn't long enough."
Brandon, North Ayrshire, Scotland
"Yes, school days should be longer, education is a huge thing in life and to have more of it would be a great help for education and will help with getting employed when you're old enough and will help you in comp and university."
Dylan, Loughor, Wales
"I don't think school days should be longer, I think they should be shorter and the holidays longer."
Caitlyn, Swansea, Wales
"I don't think that you should make school longer because the amount of school time there is, is long enough. If you put school time longer we wont have time to spend with family and friends and playing and running."
Lauren, Harrogate, England
"I don't think schools should be longer because when school ends, you have a lot of homework to do, and if we get home really late, we won't be able to finish it. And the school holidays should stay longer because it is meant to recharge yourself and anyway, we usually have work over the holidays."
Anna, Ashford, England
"Please, please don't make them longer."
Morgan, Barnsley, England
"I think we should still have six hours a day, but on one day of the week go home earlier. Then, us children will not be so tired at the end of the day!"
Hannah, Hampshire, England
"I think that school days should be longer but school holiday should be longer as well."
Harrison, Surrey, England
"We don't feel school days should be longer. At the moment we have to complete homework every night after school so if the days are made longer then we should not have to do homework."
Primary 5, West Lothian, Scotland
"I think the government should be concentrating on the quality of education - rather than quibbling about quantity!"
Jo, London, England
"I think school days and holidays are fine as they are. School can be tiring and we have homework and nearly always have very busy weeks at school."
Ian, West Lothian, Scotland
"I think Michael Gove's suggestion is ridiculous seeing as we already spend 6 hours at school five days a week. Sometimes I come home completely tired and stressed and then I have to do homework. It's also important that we get time to spend with our friends and family. I don't understand why he is trying to make our life miserable. When he went to school did he have long school hours and short holidays?"
Arnie, Cambridge, England
"I think school days are already very long, if not too long and we should not have any more hours than we already have because other wise we are too tired and we can't concentrate!"
Molly, London, England
"I think it should be longer, the longer the better."
Jasmine, Gloucestershire, England
"I think that school should be longer in winter and shorter in summer."
Lexie, Chester, England
"I think we should have longer holidays and shorter school days but my mum doesn't agree."
Ben, Shrewsbury, England
"More school days would mean more home work and the government want us to be sporty so we would not be able to go to our clubs and get our home work in on time!"
Amy, Cheltenham, England
"I am seven years old and we already work very hard at school and have homework most nights of the week. I don't want to spend all of my child hood doing schoolwork and being to tired or having no time to play."
Grace, Brackley, England
"I do not agree with Mr. Gove because i think that we spend enough time in school, especially if you do lots of after school activities like me. I get into school at quarter to 8 and am sometimes here til 6 o'clock."
Sienna, Barnsley, England
"We spend enough time stuck inside the classrooms, also we would have less time to do homework if were at school longer."
Chloe, Hucknall, England
"I think that we shouldn't have more school because it's not just the kids that need a break, the teachers need one too."
Lara, Northampton, England
"I don't think we should have longer days, as we need family time with our families. A lot of my friends miss school because they can't afford holidays in the 6 weeks as it costs so much more. Maybe they should make holiday companies lower the price then we wouldn't miss school."
Bray, Wolverhampton, England
"I think my holidays are too long because sometimes they're 6 weeks."
Abigal, Cullompton, England
"I think school days are long enough! I don't think we should because we would be very tired at the end of the day. I'm sure others feel the same!"
Mary, Inverness, Scotland
"Well since it's in England I don't mind, but if it was Scotland, no no no no no!"
Daniel, Blackburn, Scotland
"We work hard every single day, they can't do this to us."
Liam, Liverpool, England
"I think we do enough work. I am doing my SATs so I do lots of work already, as well as having extra classes."
Jess, Newcastle, England
"I think we shouldn't have longer school days because I already work hard."
Grace, Leicester, England
"I think we should stay at school longer and have less holiday time."
Bailey, Huddersfield, England
"Why don't we have summer school for people who don't get good grades?!"
Dan, Hereford, England
"No, we have enough of school. We need longer summer holidays and less of these one week breaks. That will be better, as it is the same in other countries."
Nasir, London, England
"I think that we deserve the breaks as they are now. I am always tired after school. Why should we have to go to school for even longer?"
Lois, Yarm, England
"I think that it is a good idea because most children have to do extra maths, English and science classes after school as they think that school doesn't help enough. I am one of them and I agree with Michael Gove."
"I think school days should stay the same but I agree we should have less holiday because the summer holiday is too long."
Sonja, Cheshire, England
"I think we shouldn't have as long off school as most of us forget about work and forget times tables and other things. Also I think we should keep our school time to what it is."
Annabelle, London, England
"No! That would just put more pressure on kids."
Lilly, Fleet, England
"No way should school be longer, you should spend time with your family."
Gabby, Bridgwater, England
"I think the school day should get shorter because at my school our school starts at 9 and ends at 3:30. Life is short."
Emily, Daventry, England
"I don't think that school should be longer as the things we do in school is followed by homework, so we do have more work after school as well."
"I think that school days don't need to be longer because we have eight hours at school already and sometimes it is tiring for some people to do it."
Katie, Butterwick, England
"No we should not. We have to enough work as it is and we are at school for six hours and 45 minutes!"
Georgia, Warwickshire, England
