Thousands of Hobbit fans - some dressed in capes, beards and pointy ears - have turned out for the first movie's world premiere in New Zealand.

An Unexpected Journey, the first in a trilogy, was shown in Wellington on Wednesday evening.

Director Peter Jackson hit the red carpet with the stars including British actors Martin Freeman, who's Bilbo Baggins, and Andy Serkis, who's Gollum.

The Embassy Theatre was done up to look like the entrance to a Hobbit house!

An Unexpected Journey was filmed in New Zealand and is due to hit UK cinemas on 13 December.

Earlier this month, the film's producers denied mistreating animals during the making of movie.
