Hayley hear Scarlet and Charlene's stories

Two girls have been telling Newsround what it feels like to go hungry.

Scarlet's mum can't afford to buy proper food. She said: "Sometimes you can wake up in the night because you're so hungry."

Charlene said: "If you haven't eaten in a while, it feels like a pain shooting through your belly."

She added that not eating makes it hard to concentrate in class.

The girls' parents realised they weren't getting enough food and now get help from a charity which gives them four healthy meals a week.

Since then, they've noticed a big improvement in their school work - Scarlet's in the top group for everything!

We've changed the girls' names and hidden their faces to keep their identities safe.
