The search is on for Fabio Capello's replacement

Fabio Capello has sensationally resigned as England manager.

The Italian made the decision at a meeting with the Football Association boss David Bernstein at Wembley.

He quit after a public disagreement with top FA officials over their decision to remove John Terry as England captain.

The FA have said that Stuart Pearce, the current England U-21 manager, will be in charge for the upcoming friendly against the Netherlands.

So the search is on for a permanent replacement for Capello.

Football Focus's Dan Walker thinks Harry Redknapp will take over

A lot of people reckon Spurs boss Harry Redknapp should take over, but he's said that he's never thought about the England job.

Capello's resignation brings an end to his 42-game reign as England boss, which started on 6 February 2008, with a 2-1 win against Switzerland.

Although the decision has shocked a lot of people, tension between Capello and the FA had been growing in recent weeks.

The John Terry row

Capello was angry that Chelsea defender John Terry had been stripped of the England captaincy without his say-so.

On Sunday he told an Italian TV programme: "I thought it was right that Terry should keep the captain' s armband."

Capello enjoyed a close relationship with Terry as England boss

The FA had decided that he shouldn't be the captain because he's been accused of racially abusing another player.

Terry says he is not guilty of the charge. He's due to go on trial in July.

Capello's decision to quit the job means England are looking for a new coach with just three friendly matches to go before the start of the Euro 2012 Championships.

So who would you like to see as England boss? Is it time for an Englishman to be given a go? What do you think?

"I'm a Gunner and I love Wenger, but I think the right man for the job would be Mourinho - certainly not Redknapp!"

Haydon, 11, Chesham, England

"Fabio Capello did well for England (even though we did terribly in the World Cup). I would like Sir Alex Ferguson to be the new manager. I think this because he's managed Man United so well over the years and has won a lot of trophies."

Tom, 12, Somerset, England

"I think Capello did well to resign because the England team is way too old and they have been through too many scandals. Redknapp probably won't be manager because the pressure is too high and he would do better by staying at Tottenham. I can't see any other Englishman taking on such a responsibility and pressure from the press, so I think it will have to be a foreigner again. But someone like Jose Mourinho will never take the job because he's managing a better team than England and won't want to go!"

Lapo, 13, Stockholm, Sweden

"I think Alan Shearer should be the next England manager because he's got lots of experience."
