Hayley checks out whether lessons should be updated with new technology

The government says computer lessons are behind the times and need updating.

They want schools to use the latest technology to make lessons more interactive, with lessons in animation or making smart-phone apps.

They're also hoping big companies like Microsoft and Google will help schools to become more high-tech.

On Wednesday we asked what you thought.

Your Comments:

"I believe gadgets will make class more fun, and we will want to practice more, but we learn best writing things."

Emma, 10, Bracknell, England

"I think it would be nice to have iPads in school, but the country is really poor at the moment, there isn't enough money."

Annabelle, 9, West Midlands, England

If we have new technology we won't be able to listen to teachers. I think it is silly for the Government to make this choice. If we had 'Just Dance 3' for PE, we wouldn't be able to create new ideas. For creative physical lessons i would like people's real knowledge and advice."

Isobel, 9, Kent, England

"What are they doing? Computing lessons are great just the way they are!"

Rebekah, 12

"I think ICT doesn't have to be updated because my ICT is really good! We have three rooms with 35 Apple Macs in them and they're really great! Also, my class are designing album covers and recording music!"

Amaya, 12, Bristol, England

"I think it will be good to get more high-tech equipment into our schools, but technology is moving so fast that we will need so many updates, which will just be too expensive."

Emily, 11, Hertfordshire, England

"I don't think that we need extra technology at all! I enjoy my ICT lessons and I think gadgets would be a waste of money. It is unnecessary and would become addictive."

Keerthi, 12, East Yorkshire, England

"We have had our updated and we have loads of games. We also have 4 ICT rooms. I think schools need something like ours!"

Jess, 13, Gloucestershire, England

"This shows that the government doesn't have a clue about what goes on in schools. We have up-to-date technology and are taught how to use it. Also, we are still taught important basic stuff like databases and spreadsheets which you will need in most jobs."

Lucy, 13, Cardiff, Wales

"I can already program, I taught myself, and yes everyone should have a chance to know but this is my one skill. If everyone could program and be great on the computer, then I would just be the same as everybody else, and I would have to find something different to stand me out, when I have already worked really hard creating websites and programming apps."

Peter, 12, Liverpool, England

"I think that we shouldn't use new technology, only in ICT lessons. Books are just as good as the latest smart phone or tablets. I just love opening a book or drawing/writing on paper. Future generations may forget how long a book takes to print because they will just be uploaded on a computer!

Alice, 13, Newcastle, England

"I think that this is a load of rubbish. There are already plenty of programs on the computers that teachers can use to make lessons interesting for children. Also, I feel that this will motivate gaming more than learning, which will distract pupils and put them off track."

Hannah, 13, Dumfries, Scotland

"I think it would be great to have technology like this in our lessons. I don't think we will forget how to write but if we did writing is only a form of communication and there are many other ways of communicating. Also I think they will still be lessons not video games and people who can't afford items like these could have a chance at using them."

Eleanor, 13, Wigan, England

"It's a brilliant idea! At my school we have lots of 'techy' gadgets and it makes things really enjoyable! I have lots of exams coming up and having lots of computers in lessons means that we can revise better and in different ways. It's also important for teachers to include technology in a lesson. My history teacher always reminds us of good websites and fun resources!"

Nathan, 14, Norfolk, England

"The government can't keep spending our taxes. Why replace perfectly good computers when we are already in enough debt? In real life you don't usually make websites."

Jason, 11, Dorset, England

"I think that this isn't a good idea. Programs like Word and Excel are more important in school than developing games. You should be able to choose to study programming later on in school life. Introducing i-pads and gaming devices to classrooms will definitely distract kids from the actual computing subject."

Katherine, 12, Aberdeen, Scotland

"I believe that kids should know how to program because then kids will know how to use computers better and they will know how to make games, apps and anything else they want. I know how to program and making games is fun."

Samarth, 11, Geneva, Switzerland

"I notice some people have been saying things like, 'We go to school to learn, not to play', but these people should know that it will still be educational! It will be things like practising keyboard use, learning programming languages. Not gaming."

Joseph, 11, Perth, Scotland

"We agree with schools using more updated technology, as long as there are rules involved and everyone is allowed to use them. At my school they do have i-pads but only those with learning disabilities are able to use them."

Chloe and Helen, 12, Hampshire, England

"We could update gadgets in the classroom but mostly it depends on what situation the actual school is in, some can't afford the latest tech and some can. But either way, as long as you're learning, it doesn't matter."

Mia, 11, West Sussex, England

"I think that this is a load of rubbish. There's already plenty of programs on the computers that teachers can use to make lessons interesting for children. Also, I feel that this will motivate gaming more than learning, which will distract pupils and put them off track."

Hannah, 13, Scotland

"I think that we should use new technology only in ICT lessons. Books are just as good as the latest smart phone or tablets. I just love opening a book, drawing/writing on paper. Future generations may forget how long a book takes to print because they will just be uploaded on a computer!"

Alice, 13, Newcastle, England

"I think it's a great idea. I think it will encourage kids to get more excited about learning and to contribute more in class. It would be great if it happened!"

Lydia, 10, Leicester, England

"My mum is an ICT teacher and she thinks including things like app making will be so much better as we will be more interested and have more fun. I have experienced app making and it's really fun!"

Abbie, 12, Bradford, England

"I like the idea of technology used in the classroom, but I feel that some devices are too expensive compared to their usefulness and that ICT lessons should challenge everyone more. Also, computers really need to be applied more in other subjects, especially in subjects like R.E., as the internet becomes more used in schools and with homework as a learning resource."

Sean, 12, London, England

"I think that our lessons should be updated because it's good to explore different means of technology and see how the people who created this are so clever! It might help us understand the subjects we are not so good at. I think that they should be updated, so we have more to look forward to and explore our new technology."

Libby, 10, Cardiff, Wales

"I think we need to have new technology to stop children getting bored or chatting in class when the teacher is talking."

Aaron, 10, Oxfordshire, England

"I think it is a great idea because everything is updating so why can't lessons? It also will make lessons better all around and everyone will enjoy going to school, so lets hope they do update our ICT and even other lessons."

Naomi, 13, Nottingham, England

"I think it would be a waste of money as we already have computers that do the job perfectly well."

Alicia, 12, Buckinghamshire, England

"We would love to have new gadgets and technology in school. It would be more enjoyable and fun because most of the computers we have at school are slow and old! We'd also enjoy going to school more and the kids would love it because some people can't afford it at home!"

Shannon, 12, Aberdeen, Scotland

"Schools should use the latest technology because children will be more interested in learning and it will improve children's attitudes."

Cecilia, 11, Buckinghamshire, England

"It would be much better to use updated gadgets in lessons because at our primary school we used iPads and games equipment regularly and had really high levels of learning. But when we went to secondary school our levels dropped because we were using old gadgets."

Pazza, 12, Huntingdonshire, England

"My school has just started letting us rent out iPads and it's made me want to go to school more!"

Jack, 11, Kent, England

"No! We have smart boards and computers, but I want to be learning important things instead of learning how to use an iPad/iPhone. They're not as important as our education."

Bethany, 13, Swindon, England

"I think it's an amazing idea! Our school has NO gadgets at all, except for some interactive white boards. I think it would help us to learn a lot more. One of my close friends is dyslexic and I think it could improve her spelling and help her out in the future."

Alisha, 13, Norfolk, England

"I think that there should be more technological equipment used in lessons to make them fun. If you do not like a subject adding more technology to them will make them more fun."

Ben, 9, Stockton-on-Tees, England

"I think it's a great idea, because in the future we will have lots more computers and we need to learn how to use them now. But it will be very expensive and lots of schools don't have a lot of money."

Lily, 10, London, England

"I think it would be good to update lessons because it would make them more interesting and give everybody in class a chance to interact!"

Josephine, 11, Southampton, England

"In the future generations we may forget how to write. I don't think we'll want that and we are pampered too much."

Mugdha, 9, Netherlands

"Giving schools the option to use more technology that we enjoy using is a great idea because we will have more fun in our lessons."

Emily, 12, Norfolk, England

"We think that our lessons need more technology, such as the iPad, because we can use it for most of our lessons. Also, we would like to learn about technology related to us like creating our own computer games and internet pages."

Sherwood Class, 9 - 10, London, England

"I think schools need more high tech gadgets because it would be more fun and keep kids entertained so they will try harder."

Ashley, 13, Essex, England

"We are really lucky because we are having a brand new school built with all the latest technology and it will be ready in 4 weeks! We are all hoping to have improved technology and resources to help our education."

Class Hawthorn, 8, Watford, England

"I definitely agree that we should have the latest technology because I'm fed up with just having the blackboard and chalk. It's boring!"

Blessing, 10, London, England

"I think we should have more technology in school so that more people want to come. Plus on the Wii you can get Wii draw which can be used for Art and Wii fit for P.E."

Gemma, 11, Merseyside, England

"Our school already has an ICT suite, laptops, and smart boards in every classroom. But then I suppose technology can always be improved!

Luke, 11, Merseyside, England

"I think all this technology is very good for schools because we would be fitter if we used dancing games or Wii fit. This will make children happier and they will wake up knowing they are ready to have fun in school."

Molly, 11, Merseyside, England

"I think more technology for schools is a great idea because children can have less lessons of P.E. and just go on the Wii Fit or some of the dance games. On the other hand, I think it's a terrible idea because, the children might argue over who is on what and 'mine is better than yours'. There may not be enough plug sockets either."

Mollie, 10, Merseyside, England

"Lessons aren't there to be interesting, they're there to teach us. My father works with computers as does my mother, and I just don't see why we should use them more at school. Bring back the textbooks!"

Shakria, 12, Birmingham, England

"I think that it's bad as well as good. Some people can get addicted to video games very easily and don't get the amount of exercise they need."

Gemma, 11, Merseyside, England

"We could use Just Dance in our PE lessons. It would be mega cool!"

Alicia, 10, Merseyside, England

"Some kids may misuse the technology and not be on the right things. Also we come to school to learn not to play."

Bethany, 11, Merseyside, England

"Brain Training could be used instead of mental maths! That sounds better to me!"

Alicia, 10, Merseyside, England

"It would be a good idea to use apps like Big Brain Academy, Dictionary, Brain Training or Art Pictionary or Apple Art. We can go on them for English or Numeracy."

Bethany, 11, Merseyside, England

"It really depends, some schools are not very big on high-tech stuff, plus some kids don't really know how to use it. Most schools already have lots of high-tech stuff. I therefore came to the conclusion that I personally think we don't need more technological stuff. We have enough already and we learn a lot more when we're not on the computer."

Catherine, 10, London, England

"Giving schools free technology is a good idea as it will inspire the children to listen so that they will get to have a go on whatever the new technology is."

Ayesha, 13, Holt, England

"Schools should be using X-Box, it will make work updated and more interesting, the kids would want to learn more."

Mckenzie, 11, Warwickshire, England

"This is a bad idea because it will encourage games."

Katie, 13, Suffolk, England

"Some of the computers out our school are over 10 years old and have completely outdated software, they also freeze up constantly and usually take about half of the lesson to load up."

James, 13, Staffordshire, England

"Some people are behind in class, electronic technology could help them catch up."

Eloise, 9, Malton, England

"Yes, because technology keeps advancing and we are stuck with old computers."

Adam, 10, London, England

"I think that my school doesn't need new technology because it already has iPads, iPods and laptops."

Wilfred, 9, North Lincolnshire, England

"We are getting to use gadgets at home so schools should be helping us out by using them in lessons just like we use them in life."

Xander, 9, West Midlands, England

"At our school we use Google and Microsoft every week but I do think gadgets might be useful."

Josh, 10, Suffolk, England

"I think that schools should have iPads for children who have broken an arm so they can still do music, English, maths etc."

Rachel, 13, North Lanarkshire, Scotland

"I don't think you should upgrade school technology because some people don't know some things on the computer or might not be able to work an X-Box."

Lauren, 10, South Yorkshire, England

"I think it is a terrible idea, people go to school to learn not play X-Box."

Fion, 9, County Down, Northern Ireland

"I think school lessons should be up dated, we could use iPads or laptops instead of books."

Tia, 9, London, England

"I do believe IT lessons should be updated, it's time that lessons caught up with the real world."

William, 12, York, England

"It's a great idea because it would make learning fun."

Georgia, 10, Derbyshire, England

"We can learn a lot from new technology and we don't always want to be looking in a book."

Tia, 10, West Midlands, England

"I think lessons should have more hi tech gadgets because it would make lessons more fun, keep us entertained and it's more interactive."

Emily, 13, West Sussex, England

"Yes, because this would entertain children more and make them want to learn and go to school!"

Seth, 9, Stoke-on-Trent, England

"We hardly do computer work at our school, so I think that lessons should be updated."

Louie, 10, Southampton, England

"I think we should update technology in schools because as well as learning, we can have fun!"

Omar, 10, London, England

"Our lessons are quite boring and we are learning Word documents, which we did in year 3, so it would be so much more interesting to use a games console."

Brendan, 12, Devon, England

"I think they should update technology in schools because more kids will want to go to school and learn."

Bethany, 12, London, England

"I think we should have some more high tech gadgets because they will help us learn and it would be very active."

Darren, 10, Southampton, England

"I want more gadgets because learning would be more fun, but you can't give them to little kids because they might break them."

Maab, 10, London, England

"I think this is a good idea because it means that kids can use updated technology at school and it helps kids to learn how to use new technology too."

Louis, 10, Greater London, England

"I think it would be much better for schools to have updated technology, because our computers don't work that well."

Craig, 11, North Yorkshire, England
