Canoeist breaks record for crossing English Channel

Canoeist Paul Wycherley has kayaked across the English Channel in a new record time!

He crossed the channel in two hours and 28 minutes, setting off from Dover on Sunday morning and arriving in France just after midday.

The paddler beat the 2007 record by 31 minutes and raised more £100,000 for charity.

Paul said: "I got quite sore near the end but I'm chuffed to bits and I got a really good time."

The British sprint canoeist usually races one-kilometre distances so this crossing was over 30 times that far!

Paul is now aiming to compete in the London 2012 Olympics.

"I was just so lucky with the conditions. We chose the weekend about a year ago and it could have gone any way," he admitted.

"There were a couple of lumpy bits when the ferries went past but, if anything, they broke up the monotony of it all."
