Aurora shooting: How it happened

Twelve people were killed and 58 injured when a gunman opened fire at a Batman film screening in Aurora, Colorado last week. Suspect James Holmes, 24, has appeared in court accused of carrying out the attack.

Here's what we know about what happened that day.

Century 16 Theater

Just before midnight local time, hundreds of people enter four sold-out screenings of the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight Rises, at the Century 16 Movie Theater, Aurora, Colorado.

2. Back door of Century 16 Theater

At about midnight the screening begins. In Theatre 9 a man approaches an emergency exit to the right of the screen and goes out, leaving the door propped open.

Gunman returns with weapons

The gunman returns dressed in black, wearing a mask and carrying three weapons - a semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun and a handgun. He sets off two smoke devices and begins firing randomly at the audience.

At 0039, police begin receiving emergency calls about the shooting. They arrive at the scene just over a minute later. Suspect James Holmes is taken into custody near his car at the back of the cinema. A fourth weapon is found in his car.
