In pictures: Deadly Mumbai blasts
India's main commercial city, Mumbai, has been hit by three bomb blasts. One was in the heart of the city and two others in the south. All the bombs went off in crowded areas during the rush hour.
This photograph shows victims of a blast at the Zaveri Bazaar crowding into the back of a cargo truck to be taken to a hospital.
In the Dadar area, a taxi parked next to a bus stop was blown up.
The blast in the Zaveri Bazaar area - not far from the famous Mumbadevi temple - reportedly came from a motorbike parked near a jewellery shop on Khaul Gali road.
Police also said explosives might have been hidden inside an electricity meter box.
In the Opera House area, the bomb was planted in a two-storey building on Charni road, local media said.
Mumbai was placed on high alert and residents were urged to avoid the districts where the bombs had gone off.
Delhi, Calcutta and a number of other Indian cities, including Ahmadabad, were also placed on alert.
The authorities said the blasts were a terrorist attack.
Mumbai has seen a series of bomb attacks in recent years, including co-ordinated attacks by Islamist militants in 2008, in which more than 160 people died.
