Many killed in Indian bus crash

At least 22 people were killed and 24 others injured when a bus carying holidaymakers plunged into a gorge in northern India, police say.

The bus, on its way from Haridwar town to Mussoorie in Uttarakhand state, skidded off the road.

Among the dead were two women and six children, the police said.

Bus crashes are common in India. Often caused by poorly maintained vehicles and reckless driving, they claim thousands of lives every year.

Senior Superintendent of Police GS Martolia told the Press Trust of India news agency that the passengers - businessmen and their families - had gone to Mussoorie along with their families for the New Year celebration.

The injured have been taken to a government hospital.
