Taichung: One Square Mile of Taiwan

Taiwan's industrial city of Taichung has a reputation for being one of the island's most relaxed cities.

Its laid-back people, however, make a very big noise when it comes to deciding the political course of the country.

The island is currently enjoying relatively friendly relations with its giant neighbour China. Elections next January, however, could change that.

The Nationalist Party, also known as the Kuomintang (KMT), currently runs the city as well as the government. But the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), with a cooler attitude towards the mainland, could gain power here in 2012.

Taichung is regarded as a key battleground in national elections, with swing voters that can tip the balance of power.

The BBC's Juliana Liu took to one square mile of the city to gauge the locals' views on the country's future.
