A man arrested on suspicion of arson after a large fire destroyed a Jersey boatyard has been found dead, police have confirmed.

The man, 63, who has not been named, was arrested on 9 December and was due to answer bail on Wednesday.

Police said his death was not being treated as suspicious.

Residents in St Aubin were forced to flee their homes and nearly 20 firefighters were involved in putting out the fire on 7 December.

The States of Jersey Police said it had voluntarily referred the case to the Jersey Police Complaints Authority, which was standard practice because the force had recent contact with the man.

Boating firm Gallichan Marine's premises were destroyed in the blaze.

Police said the investigation into the blaze was continuing.
