Earthquake tremors affect Jersey

Jersey has felt the effects of an earthquake early on Boxing Day morning.

There have been no reports of damage from the earthquake which was felt around the island at about 01:30 GMT.

Reports suggest a magnitude of 2.9, but the Jersey Met Department said it was waiting for the British Geological Society to confirm this.

A spokesman said it was believed that the earthquake could be an after-effect of a bigger quake that happened in Brittany in November.

Richard Watson, 73, from St Helier said he had been woken up by the earthquake.

"I felt the side of the house shaking and there was a very large bang.

"It was really sudden and I wondered what the heck it was."
