Jersey retail sales down by 2%, says report

Shoppers in Jersey have bought fewer goods than the same time last year, according to a States of Jersey report.

Official figures compiled by the States Statistics Unit show retail sales fell by 2% during April to June this year.

Food sales also fell slightly from earlier in the year, down by 1% on the previous quarter.

A Jersey-based online retailer says the latest sales figures should also include how much is spent on the internet to be accurate.

Paul Clark, who runs an online furniture and interiors company, said including internet businesses might give a more accurate picture.

Internet sales have been included in retail figures for a few years in the UK and it has been trialling a separate online index.

Jersey's Statistics Unit says it is monitoring that before it decides whether or not to include online figures in its report.

In the UK, about 10% of sales are online and Mr Clark believes Jersey figures could be even higher.

It is a lower drop than in June 2012 when sales figures fell by 6%.
