Jersey man, 20, found guilty of attempted rape

A 20-year-old man has been found guilty of the attempted rape and indecent assault of a 13-year-old girl.

Steven James Vincent, from St Helier, was cleared of rape by a jury in Jersey's Royal Court.

The court heard how Vincent, who denied the charges, had assaulted the teenage at the flat he shares with his mother.

During the case, the alternative charge of attempted rape was brought in to be considered by the jury.

In her evidence, given via video link, the victim said they had been in contact via Facebook and text messages before she agreed to visit him alone in June 2011.

She said while in his bedroom what started out as "innocent fun" changed to an assault during which he held her down leaving marks on her neck.

Vincent is due back in court for sentencing on 18 October.
